The Balkan region has been traditionally represented as a European “periphery” and “other European” in Western discourse since the 18th century. These speeches have been embodied in the texts of different travellers, administrators and European scientists who have had a direct or indirect experience with the Balkans. In the 1990s similar screeds were recovered when it was held by the disintegration of Yugoslavia, presenting the situation of war and violence as something “typical Balkan”.
