This article is to analyze the role of the borders in the political construction of the cross-border metropolis in Europe. Firstly, a reflection on the process of emergence of the cross-border metropolis, is carried out in order to underline their specificities. On the basis of a theoretical reflection, develops an analysis framework of functions attributed to the borders. Then, Basel, Geneva and Luxembourg cases allow to examine the way Metropolitan actors mobilize certain functions assigned to the borders to develop and bring to fruition their strategies of development and cross-border integration.
