Last year, the center of temporary shelters for irregular migrants in Lampedusa, the southernmost island of Italy, has been repeatedly denounced by the cases of alleged violations of human rights. This article presents an overview of developments and policies driven by the Governments of Italy and Libya, the European Union and the International Organization for migration and summarizes the arguments surrounding these policies. According to the author, policies aimed at deterring irregular migration flows in Europe and the fight against the smuggling of migrants in Libya, paradoxically, it could lead to an increase in trafficking networks.
