In the mid-20th century, appeared a new phenomenon in Western Europe and Scandinavia together with the construction of a United Europe: the establishment of cross-border regions and its institutionalization through the cooperation among them. Since then, dozens of cross-border regions, especially since 1990, mostly operating under the names of Euroregion, community work or eurodistrict have been created. Their territorial distribution has also expanded, and today there is practically no border sub-State authority not participating in any cooperation initiative.
